2014 November Report

We are coming to the end of  year with most Snowbirds returning to the fold. The new sponsored competition, the Avalon Cup, drawn triples and Palace Cup, handicap singles still to play before the end of the year. The only club event played to date this month was the ABC Drawn Fours which was won by the team, Reg Birmingham, John Burgess, Shelagh Allen and Jim Pike against the gallant losers, Graham and Catherine Patrick, Brenda Lincoln with Sylvia Pritchard. Unfortunately Graham’s team could not compete with Reg and company on this occasion, although they were very strong in the early rounds. The main damage was done by Reg who appeared to be ‘walking on water’ ably supported by his team.

On the 13th of November the 2013 AGM took place after the roll up and was reasonably well attended.  Our Chairman, Anthony Jackson thanked the committee for the work done during the past year and gave our outgoing Captain. Colin Wright, many thanks for his job done and welcomed our new Captain, John Fitzgerald and Chris Brown taking the Vice Captains job.

Colin’s farewell speech gave special thanks to yours truly, and Stuart Beetham   plus all the committee that had   supported him during his reign and wished John and the 2014/15 committee good luck for the future year.

I am sure all members will join me in giving special thanks to Sandra Brown for the fantastic job she has done in her role as Social Secretary.  Taking charge of raffles, raising lots of money for the club with the help of Eileen Phoenix and other members. More recently a very professional job organizing a wonderful day when 32 members and guests travelled by coach to Torreviej, to play a game of bowls against   Vistabella B.C. She also arranged a sausage and bacon sandwiches on our arrival and a three course lunch with wine after the game. We won’t say too much about the games apart from giving a mention and congratulate the only winning rink, Wayne & Carol Roberts with Glenis Atkinson and Eileen Phoenix.

Other thanks are given to Glenis Atkinson working each week running the Lotto and gaining more funds for the club. Siobhan Herrity for heading up a subcommittee of Sandra Brown and Stuart Beetham to raise sponsorship money for projects to be discussed. Watch this space!!!!

Also making our bowling area looking good by cutting steps onto the green to allow bowlers to step on the carpet safely was Tony Mullen and Graham Patrick. Finishing off the new look bowling area was an our illustrious painters, John Fitzgerald, Catherine  Patrick and Ken Sykes painting surrounding walls and the new concreted area between the two greens. Thanks to the Anthony and Shirley and staff for getting this concreting done. Finally, Jim Pike with help of Ron Lloyd and Brian Hughes have done a grand job looking after our carpet.

We now look forward to our ‘Christmas Lunch and Prize Presentation’ which will take place after our roll up on Thursday, December 11th where at the time of writing is well supported. With seventy-five   members and guests which once again as been well managed by Sandra Brown  .Please try and make it, especially the prize winners.

As there will only be a  brief report for December Joan and I take this opportunity to wish all members a very Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year. Remember all the above  and the year’s competitions can be read in full on our website. www.bowlingalmeria.com
