2021 McCraw 2 Wood Singles
REPORT
Date: 22 – 25 April
The rearranged two wood (yardstick) singles attracted a good number of competitors in these straitened times and a full round of 16 was played before the quarter finals. Unfortunately, the first days play took place in the kind of horrendous downpour that would have had Noah reaching for his toolbox. The competitors and markers manfully played through it albeit mostly looking like Ranulph Fiennes on his way to the North Pole. Match of the first round was Wayne Roberts and Linda Latham which went to two extra ends before Wayne won 17-16. Wayne though then lost to an in form Chris Smith 13-8 to set up a semi final against Brian Hallam which also went to an extra end with Brian winning 12-11. Tony Lear won the other semi final 16-5 against John Fitzgerald who simply could not make progress against the handicap. Tony who had played very strongly throughout the tournament reeled off a string of winners to open a 9-1 lead and well as Brian played he could not quite bridge the gap, Tony winning 14-11. The final was an excellent exhibition of pure draw bowling and Tony was a well deserved winner. Thanks especially to the markers and Bryan Hughes for battling through against the weather and Tony, as usual, for organising the tournament.
