2011 Arthur Pinn Drawn Pairs
The support for this competition was ideal with 32 players, sixteen drawn pairs, taking part. On this occasion it was sad but also exciting, in as much it was the last club competition to be played on our grass green because after the final the diggers will start to prepare for our future carpet, hopefully to be completed by end of January 2012.
The competition commenced on Monday 14th and reached the semi-final and Final on the Monday the 21st instead of the planned date of the 18th November. During this time the heavens opened and at times it was hard to see when it would be completed. However we were fortunate that Monday morning the semis took place.
The first was between Chris Ewer and Sue Mannall playing against Les Pratchett and Graham Deykin. All players had been playing well to get to this stage but Les and Graham were in a cruel mood and didn’t let Sue and Chris in the game.
The second was the formidable pair of Colin Wright and Roy Tonkin against my wife Joan and Ken Sykes. Colin and Roy were leading all the way in spite of excellent play of Joan and Ken and having a late rally of nine shots on the last two ends, they were unable to reach that winning score.
The Final looked good with all players on form and the many supporters were thinking there could be an upset here with the favourites Colin and Roy being beaten by Les and Graham. However although the scores were even on the sixth and tenth end, Les and Graham were unable to score many more shots and allowed Colin and Roy to cruise in to win the competition.
Jim Pike thanked the viewing members for their support o and yours truly for the organisation of the competition. The winning shield was kindly presented to Colin and Roy by Shelagh Allen.
