2010 Miraflores Open Pairs
This Miraflores Open Mixed Pairs was the re-arranged competition that was postponed due to bad weather and should have been played in December 2009. There was a good entry with 28 pairs taking part from Almeria including six pairs from La Mata Bowls Club.
Once again this year we were threatened with cold and wet weather but were able to play the round-robin format, playing three timed games of a maximum of eight ends on the first scheduled day on Monday 8th March.
The leaders were Dave Allen pairing with a visiting friend Liz Proctor. Liz hadn’t played on grass before and had little competition experience, so a big plus for her reaching this position.Wayne and Carol Roberts were close behind in second place with Graham and Ann Clough taking third place.
Unfortunated there was continuous rain during the night before the second day, Tuesday 9th of March. Decision was made to abandon the first scheduled game for all players and commenced the continuation of the competition at midday.
Fortunately the weather improved to glorious sunshine and was able to complete the remaining two games. It is unusual that in a two day round-robin competition that the first day leaders actually end up winners. This year our recent round-robin event, the Inaugural Cup first day leaders Alan and Pat Deacon won and it was repeated again in this competition with Dave Allen and Liz Proctor winning well, John Fitzgerald and Viv Sykes second with Colin Wright and Ann Mason coming in a close third, with Roy and Patsy Tonkin forth.
Prizes were awarded to the four pairs above by Jose Gee, one of our La Mata guests. Thanks were given by our captain Jim Pike to yours truly and co organizer Maureen Atkins for the smooth running of the competition. I then repeated my thanks for Maureen’s help with producing the scoring card format together with Ken Sykes for doing a grand job carrying out umpiring and timing judge duties.
