The Eleanor McCraw (drawn pairs) and Reliant Trophy (drawn triples) competitions are played every year on Monday and Friday evenings from May until September when the finals are completed. Games are played over 18 ends when points are scored for each end won, 4 for a win 2 for a draw. The best 8 games are counted towards the players final score to determine the finalists.
The evening of September 6th heralded the first of the two summer competitions finals, the Eleanor Mcraw Cup took place. After a tense summer the successful four finalists were drawn into teams of Jennie Thompson and Allan Terry against John Mannall and Terry Rodgers.
Four days later, again in the evening of the 10th September the other final, the Reliant Trophy took place. The finalists were once again drawn, ending up with teams Carol Roberts, Rod Digweed and Alan Terry playing against John and Eileen Pheonix and Chris Ewer.
Eleanor McCraw Final
After eleven ends, Jennie and Allan just inched in front by a single end with the shot score even at 9-9. John and Terry unfortunately relaxed too much and pressure was put on by Jennie and Allan increasing there tally after fifteen ends to 10-5 with a comfortable score of 22-9 in shots. John and Terry fought hard and manage to win two ends of the three remaining. However the champions were Jennie and Allan with a final impressive score of 11-7 ends and shot score of 22-11.
Reliant Trophy Final
This was an exciting match played in good spirits. A slow start with scores level after four ends. Then as expected Alan Terry, Rod and Carol took more control winning 7 ends and being 8 shots ahead on the ninth end. On the next end Chris, John and Eileen showed great composure taking 6 shots on the tenth end, then winning 7 out of the last nine remaining ends, completing the task by winning comfortably and refreshing to see new names on this trophy.
Well done to all members taking part during the summer and especially to the finalists. Ann Tuplin our Social Secretary, on behalf of the management presented a plant to Sue Mannall, ably assisted by John, for ensuring the smooth running of both competitions during the summer. I would also like to thank Sue personally for keeping me in touch and giving me the material to report in the local press and to put on our website, www.bowlingalmeria.com.
