2015 Appleby Vase & Dyer Cup Club Singles


The men and ladies Club Singles, Dyer Cup and the Appleby Vase, commenced on Thursday January 29th and played through the next four days until Sunday 1st February when the Semi-finals and Finals took place. Most of this period the games were played in cold and windy. Weather.

The winner of the Appleby Vase was defending champion, Catherine Patrick over Chris Parkinson and Reg. Birmingham over the defending champion, John Fitzgerald in the Dyer Cup.

Appleby Vase Final – Catherine (Cath) continued with a quality playing performance which she had sustained throughout the competition. Chris Parkinson, a relatively new bowler, had a great game and proved she will be a player to watch out for in the future. In the end, Cath regained the championship comfortably.

Dyer Cup Final – This was expected to be a  tight game as both men had won lots of competitions prior to this meeting. John started well taking two shots on the first end. However Reg was in a mean mood and wouldn’t let John settle. Although Reg had a commanding game to take the championship. If John was playing anyone else he would have been in a winning position, but hats off to Reg. 

Ladies Semi-Finals – Chris Parkinson reached the final by playing another new up and coming bowler, Maureen O ‘Hara. In the other semi-final Cath played Chris Fitzgerald Well done to all finalists for reaching this stage

Men’s Semi-finals – This was played between arguably the top four men players in the club. John Fitzgerald played Tony Mullen. Reg Birminham had a good game to beat Colin Wright, a several times winner of this competition in the past. 

After the game Jim Pike, who stood in for John, congratulated all players and markers, despite the awful weather on the way they coped and their standard of bowls played. He also thanked the markers, who without we couldn’t hold the competition.
